Quick fix on Samsung Galaxy S4 Messenger App constantly crashing


For the past several years, App related issues in android devices is rampant and there are lots of android users were complaining about it saying that some of their apps crashed without apparent reason.  So, in this troubleshooting guide, I'll discuss one of the most common app crashes that users were reported to us, which is the Messenger app crashing. This time, we have to isolate the issue through performing the basic troubleshooting procedures until we can figure it out the reason why the Messenger app crashed on your device. That being said, here are the methods that you should do:

Step 1: Check if there are available updates on your Messenger App
Through this procedure,we will verify if your Messenger App is up to date because if not, then, that would be the reason why it is crashing. You can open your Play Store app and see if there are available updates for your Messenger. However, if the app is updated and the issue still happening, then, there might be another factor triggered it, then move to the next step.

Step 2: Reset your Messenger App
Doing this method, will bring your Messenger app back to its factory default by deleting all its cache and data stored in app's partition. So, if outdated files and data caused that the app crashed, then, through this step there is a big chance that the issue will be fixed. Here's how:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap More tab.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Swipe left to view All tab.
  6. Scroll to and tap Messenger App.
  7. Tap Clear Cache.
  8. Tap OK.
  9. Tap Clear Data.
After this, open your Messenger again and observe if the issue still continues. If so, proceed to the next method.

Step 3: Uninstall and Reinstall the Messenger App
In this instance, we will make sure that your Messenger app is the latest version by uninstalling it first and reinstall it afterwards. By simply doing it, all app's files and data will be replaced by newer ones and could run smoothly once it is loaded to the system. This is how you do it:
  1. Open Play Store.
  2. Tap the Menu.
  3. Tap My Apps.
  4. Select the app that you want uninstall by tapping the name.
  5. Tap the Uninstall button.
After you uninstall and reinstall the app, open your Messenger app and see if will still crash. If not, then, the app might be outdated and that would be the reason that the issue is happening. But if the problem continues after the step, proceed to the next procedure.

Step 4: Perform Master reset
This method is more complicated compared to the previous methods that you performed because it will delete all files and data on your phone. Meaning, you have to bring your phone back to its default settings and all bugs that might causing the issue will be removed from the system. But before you follow the steps, we suggest you to first a backup so that you can restore it back once the issue is fixed. 
  1. Turn the phone off.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys at the same time.
  3. Release the Power button when the phone vibrates but continue to press and hold the Volume Up and Home buttons.
  4. When the Android System recovery screen appears, release both the Home and Volume Up buttons.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight 'wipe cache data/ factory reset.
  6. Press the Power button to select it.
  7. Once the reset is complete, choose 'Reboot system no.'
  8. Press the Power button to restart the device.
