Application crashing after an update is common and not just Samsung Galaxy S4 is experiencing this type of problem but other high-end devices as well. Mostly, this issue is happening if the app's cache and data had been ruined during the update and the firmware is having a hard time recognizing it that is why it crashes without apparent reason.
So, in this article, I'll walk you through to the troubleshooting steps that you should do on your phone so that you can have an idea if you can encounter this issue in the future. We will try to isolate all possibilities and rule out each one of them until we can fix the problem.
Here's how to troubleshoot Apps crashing issue
Step 1: Bring back the App to its default settings
As I mentioned earlier, this issue may be caused by corrupt cache and data in the app and the best thing that you should do now is to reset it. Meaning, all old files and data that the app is using will be deleted and fresher ones will be deleted. Here's how:
- From Home screen, Tap the Menu key.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap the More tab.
- Tap Application Manager.
- Swipe to the All screen.
- Tap the desired app.
- Tap Clear data and tap OK.
- Tap Clear cache.
After resetting the app, launch it again and see if it will still crashed. If so, then try the next step.
Step 2: Wipe the System Cache Partition
Unlike to the previous procedure, this one will delete the overall caches in the device that may be corrupted during the update process and caused the problem. Don't you worry, all your personal files saved in the internal storage will remain intact and only the files and data in the partition will be deleted.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up key and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight 'wipe cache partition.'
- Press the Power key to select it.
- After the wipe cache is complete, press the Power key to select reboot system now.
- Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.
Step 3: Create a backup and reset your phone
However, if clearing the system cache partition didn't fix the issue, then the last option that you should do is to perform factory reset. In other words, all personal files and data in the device including apps that you downloaded will be all deleted. But the good thing is, once you have to do this method all bugs and other firmware-related issues will be fixed. But before you perform the steps, be sure to create first a backup.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume and Home keys.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key several times to highlight 'wipe data/ factory reset.'
- Press the Power button to select.
- Press the Volume Down key until 'delete all user data' is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the Master reset.
- When the Master reset is complete, 'Reboot system now' is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
