The reason that the error message pops up on the screen it is because the device is telling you that the messages app that you are using is crashing. Mostly, this issue is caused by an app that might interfering the system or the firmware itself has a problem and caused the error message to appear on the screen. So, in this post, I'll walk you through to the troubleshooting procedures that you need to do to rule-out all factors that might trigger this problem and resolve it if possible.
Here are the methods that we suggest you to do in fixing this issue
Step 1: Perform battery-pull procedure
The "Unfortunately Messages has stopped' error is mostly occur if the firmware is not functioning normally or the memory of the phone could no longer cater all running apps in the background and resulted the messaging app to crash. So, in this instance, we have to refresh the memory of the phone by pulling out the battery from the device. While doing it and the battery has been removed, try to press the Power key for 15 seconds to release all electricity present in the hardware components. After you do so, put it back the battery and try to turn it on, but if the error message still showing on the screen, jump over to the next step.
Step 2: Reboot your phone in Safe mode
Rebooting your phone in safe mode will disable all third-party apps and only the pre-installed ones will be running in the system. So, if the error message won't pop-up while in this environment there is a big chance that a culprit triggered the problem. Find that one and uninstall it to get rid this issue.
- Turn off the device completely.
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When 'Samsung Galaxy S5 appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume Down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume Down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume Down key when you see Safe mode.
But while in this state and the issue persist, move to the next procedure.
Step 3: Delete the Apps Cache and data
In this method, we will try to reset the Messages app's cache and data to be sure that all of it are new and compatible to the system. Don't you worry, this method won't erase your stored messages, instead, only the files and data stored in the app partition. This is how you reset the app:
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Find and tap Settings.
- Under the 'APPLICATIONS' section, find and tap the Application manager.
- Swipe to the left or to the right to display the appropriate screen but to display all apps, choose the 'ALL' screen.
- Find and tap 'Messages'.
- Tap Clear Cache.
- Tap Clear Data.
After you reset the Messages app, use your phone again and see if the error message still show up. If it doesn't, then obviously it is an outdated cache and data triggered it. But if the problem still happening, proceed to the next procedure.
Step 4: Wipe the System Cache and data
As you all know, there are two-types of cache your phone have; the app's and system cache. But this time, we have to delete its system caches to be sure that all files and data are new once you have to use again your phone. Although there is no assurance that the issue will be fixed after you do so, but there were reports we received from other users telling that after wiping the system cache partition the issue is resolved. Here's how:
- Turn off your Galaxy S5.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up, Home and Power keys.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up and Home keys.
- When the 'Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight 'wipe cache partition'.
- Press the Power key to select it.
- When the wipe cache partition in complete, 'Reboot system now' is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
But if the device still function abnormally after you do the wiping the cache partition, jump over to the next step.
Step 5: Master reset your phone
Since, the error message still showing up after wiping the cache directory, then your last option is to do a reset. Through this procedure, your phone will be back to its default settings and all saved files on your internal storage will be deleted. So, before you follow the steps make sure that all your files and data were transferred to your SD card or personal computer. Follow these steps to do the reset:
- Turn off your Galaxy S5 completely.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys at the same time.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Home and Power keys.
- When the 'Android System recovery' appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
